When Sports and Art Meet

I've never been a "sporty" person. I was that girl who got hit in the head with a softball...or soccer ball...or volleyball. Hand-eye coordination has just never been my thing. Or, perhaps I was spending too much time with my head in the clouds. It's a little ironic that I went on to marry a sports fanatic! My husband, Keith, knows every score, every athlete and every stat. It will be interesting to see which way the pendulum swings, when our kids grow up.

I do, however, enjoy being active. I like exercising and if I'm sitting too long I start getting antsy. The same goes for my kids. If my daughter, Laina, is sitting in front of an ipad or tv for too long, I start feeling like a lazy mom. One day, while I was taking a shower (since that's when I have most of my lightbulb moments), I wondered what it would be like to have a sports and art mash-up.

This is how it went down, if you would like to try this with your kids:

You'll need:

  • WASHABLE paint

  • water

  • ice cube trays

  • plastic golf clubs or hockey sticks

  • a driveway, parking lot or other outdoor hard surface

Mix a little bit of paint with water (about one part paint, to two parts water). You could use one color, but we used a rainbow of colors, which I think is more fun.

Pour diluted paint into ice cube trays and place in the freezer until frozen.

Dump the frozen cubes onto your driveway or parking lot and it's game time! Use your golf cubs or hockey sticks to hit the colorful cubes all around and watch as they melt and splatter together. You can set up nets or targets, or just have fun moving them around.

I think next time, I'll double the amount of ice cubes, or find larger ice cube trays. On a hot day, they melt fast!

As they melted, Laina enjoyed stomping on them and smushing them with the end of her golf club. The next day it rained and our mess was just a memory. Can't wait to try this again soon!
